Retail recovers at fastest rate this year

The retail sector has improved at its fastest rate this year, however the 3.5% rise in sales last month is largely due to a particular poor sector performance in September 2011.

Recent extreme weather conditions caused a surge in sales of winter clothing which resulted in a boost for fashion by 3% year-on-year. Non-fashion also grew by a rate of 7%, which is attributable to strong sales in gifts, leisure, beauty and luxury sales.

Sales in August suffered from what has been labelled “the Olympic Lull”, but there has been substantial recovery in September, with 32.5% growth in online and mobile sales. The only are of retail that saw a drop in sales was homeware – where sales decreased by 5.3%
